Wick pins are extremely convenient when you make batches of votive candles. They save you the frustration of having to keep the wicks straight and centered, which can be quite a challenge with votive wicks, wax coated and with a natural tendency to curl. Just drop a wick pin inside the votive mold and pour the wax as you normally would. Once the wax has set, you just pop the candle out of the mold, remove the wick pin and thread the votive wick through the hole left in the wax. Child's play!
Wick pins are almost exclusively used to make votive candles; larger models exist that accomodate pillar candle molds but since most pillar molds come with a wick hole, and keeping in mind the wide variety of mold sizes and shapes, I don't really see the point...
But if you're making votive candles, wick pins come highly recommended!
