Melting equipment

Before you can do anything with paraffin, you'll need to give it a liquid form by heating it.

To this purpose, two methods or a combination of these three methods are available but once again, you'll probably only have a choice if you live in the United States.

But whatever method you make yours, remember one important thing, even if you forget all the rest:

Except in extremely exceptional cases, never place your melting pot with paraffin directly on a heat source (flame or electric plate)!!!

Always use the double boiler method.

Before you start melting paraffin or candle gel, please read carefully our articles titled Safety first and Your workplace.
  • Never forget that the composition of paraffin is very close to that of oil and also contains a variable amount of oil.
  • Remember that paraffin not only has a melting point but also a flash point, temperature where it will catch fire.
  • If you need to walk away from melting paraffin, for any reason or duration, always turn off the heat source.
  • Don't forget that what actually burns in a candle are paraffin vapors and NOT the wick. Vapors also occur when you heat paraffin and are FLAMMABLE. Keep flames away from melting paraffin and do not smoke while you're working with paraffin.
  • All the safety rules that apply to a deep fryer also apply to your candlemaking melting equipment. Once again, read the article titled Safety first and take a look at the pictures that illustrate what happens when you pour a simple glass of water on a burning deep fryer.

  • Now that this has been said, let's get back to our three melting methods.

    These are:
  • the double boiler method,
  • the electric slow cooker method,
  • the dedicated wax melter method.
  • This kind of double boiler is very safe when supervised correctly
