Our candlemaking books selection
Along the years, we've bought and read a huge pile of candlemaking books...
Some were very well written, illustrated and instructive, other weren't.
On this page, we present the books we found worth buying together with (where available) a short introduction.

The Complete Candlemaker
Probably one of the best candlemaking projects book available, our Gold medal. Interesting for both beginners and more advanced candlemakers. Superbly illustrated, "The Complete Candlemaker" reviews almost all existing techniques and presents, for each of them, detailed explanations and intelligible, easy to understand and - above all - achievable projects!
If you have only two books on your candlemaking bookshelf, let them be this one and "The candlemaker's companion".

The Encyclopedia of Candlemaking Techniques
Here's another very good projects book. Silver medal. Once again, all techniques are explored into the details and the reading of this book will make you want to rush to your workplace and immediatly start reproducing the presented projects.
Magnificiently illustrated, almost exhaustive: highly recommended.

Great Candles
The bronze medal of all candlemaking projects books. Like the previous one, this book details the majority of existing techniques but the projects are presented with less details. However, it gains points by making use - whenever possible - of pieces of equipment you probably already have at home and not expensive specialised equipment. That's a very good idea for beginners!

The Candlemaker's Companion
Nothing less than a fabulous book for the more "advanced" candlemakers or for those who want to dig deep into the subject.
The author, Betty Oppenheimer, thoroughly explores all candlemaking topics and often makes use of chemistry and history to give away as much explanations as possible. This book is about more than just candles: you'll also learn how to make your own candle molds and other items related to candles and candlemaking.
Essential on your bookshelf!!! Caution though: if you're looking for a projects book, this one is not recommended.

The Ultimate Gel Candle Book
A beautiful and excellent book that introduces exhaustively the basics of working with candle gel as well as more advanced (and original) projects.
These projects, as I just mentionned, are extremely original and not another repetition of what you may have read elsewhere already.
Should you hesitate between this book and the next one (Gel Candles, 40 creative projects), be assured that both books are complementary and offer different types of projects. A recommended reading!

Gel candles: 40 creative projects
For anyone who wants to start Gel candlemaking, this is the ideal book. It starts with a detailed explanation of what candle gel is, its properties, how to safely work with candle gel, how to fight air bubbles and takes you by the hand for the step-by-step creation of a basic gel candle.
To follow, you'll find 40 projects, all superbs and really original, ordered by increasing difficulty. There's also an interesting chapter about candles made with paraffin AND candle gel, again illustrated with very nice, doable projects .
